Not So Bad

It's pretty much true. My friends have made some pretty hilarious posters of some of my other friends. From ridiculous "vote for me" posters to prom date advertisements. However entertaining these escapades didn't have any significant effects on the victims social life. Go figure.

With just a few more weeks till Anime Expo I'm going to be counting down my top 5 favorite Anime every Monday and Friday till expo, but I need sleepies right now. Check back later, I'll post my 5th favorite anime with a nice review for you very soon.

Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

How can anyone expect me to choose a top 5 favorite anime? It's like someone asking you which of your children you love more. I mean, sure Wesley is more athletic, kind, helpful, and less crack addicted than your other son who calls himself Beefo, but I love them both. I digress...

Coming in at number 5 is Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu!

This series is actually a sort of spinoff of the series Full Metal Panic which I haven't seen yet but I'm told it has a very different plot and overall atmosphere.

The main character Souske Sagara is an exceptional soldier, I think he may even be ranked as a general, but he's a highschool student! The story revolves around the ridiculous and often counter-productive safety measures he goes through to protect his friends. For example the story begins with a love note in Souske’s locker from a shy school girl. Souske thinks its obviously a trap and decides to rig his locker with explosives to destroy any potential threat. Of course this results in utter hilarity, and it only gets better!

The title "Fumoffu" comes from a suped-up Bonta Kun suit Souske constructs in order covertly to protect his friend Kaname Chidori when she’s asked on a date to "Fumo Fumo Land." Of course it quickly becomes clear that Souske and Chidori have romantic feelings for each other and that develops nicely, there are some touching moments between the laughs.

My absolute favorite part of the series is when all the students go to some hot springs and elite soldier and pervert Kurz gets some of his classmates together to sneak a peek in the girls hot spring. Souske is well aware of Kurz intentions and thwarts attempt after attempt till finally in perhaps the most hilarious scene ever one of the boys makes it in only to find... Well, you really should see it. The comical genius of that episode alone is epic.

Despite having no definite running plot this anime was awesome. It's only short-coming was the brevity of the series. Only about one seasons worth if I remember correctly, and I would've watched forever if they let me.

Back at Last

Amidst a hellishly drawn out week long of finals I found it pretty tough to get a post that was worthy of your eyes written and ready. Go figure. Let's all just pretend that never happened, because it's certainly something that I'm ready to forget.

What I meant to talk about last week was the issue of spyware and its equally-as-vicious counterpart adware. At one point not long ago these may have appeared like a couple of rambunctious kids, breakin' windows, stealin' pies, and just causing trouble. But they're all grown up now, and following in the footsteps of their older brother spam, they've manifested themselves into some potentially serious problems. This revelation didn't really sink for me in until last weekend, when I found an absurd amount of junk problems all over my filesystem. All year long I've kept a close eye on my school computer. I've kept it up to date with the latest virus, spyware, and adware utilities. But I paid little attention to my home computer, as my stays on it were much less frequent and not nearly as extended. I thought, wrongly, that because my home computer doesn't have a persistent connection that it isn't in the same need of protection. I was proved wrong when I found 82 of the same files in about 400 directories on my hard drive. Basically any folder with 'ftp' or 'download' in the name got tagged with these junk files. Furious, I spent 45 minutes manually deleting every one of these files. Then I installed two of the spyware removal tools that I'm familiar with, Ad-aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Both of these reported about 100 instances of spy/adware on my system, effectively raising my hopes enough to think that maybe the problem had been removed. I then decided to reboot my computer and voila, every single file that I spent so much time deleting had been restored to its original place. What a catastrophic waste of time, I could've been playing Mario vs. Donkey Kong instead of arduously and stupidly deleting thousands of files. I still have yet to find a cure for my infected system, perhaps there's an entry in the registry I need to remove, but as of right now I'm just trying to ignore it.

The moral of the story here, folks, is twofold. One: the removal tools available (even the ones with online updates such as what I use) can do a good job deleting a lot of potentially harmful things on your system, but they are not infallible. Often if you're looking to get rid of a certain problem, your best bet is to look for a specific fix online or, if it's an especially annoying and/or harmful problem, the least painful option may actually be to reformat your entire hard drive. Two: it's always better to just kick back and play some M. vs. D.K. rather than try to do things manually on your computer. Your computer can perform operations a heck of a lot faster than you can. What took you a couple hours can easily be undone in a couple seconds.

Sorry about the Tuesday post, I'll try to make this a bit of an anomaly. More than likely, with my new early morning gym routines, I'll be able to get posts to you while visions of cream puffs still dance around in your mind.
